Combat System - Combat Round
« on: August 22, 2021, 03:02:19 PM »
An outline of how Combat Rounds work

Both players and NPCs (Non Player Characters) have Hit Dice and also a Prowess attribute, these are required settings if a gamebook employs combat.

Hit Dice

The Hit Dice setting is a number of dice, for example 1d6 (1 roll of 6 sided dice) or 3d20 (3 rolls of a 20 sided dice) and is used in each round of combat.

The more rolls of the dice and the more sides gives a potentially better chance of successfully winning the combat round.

Prowess

The Prowess attribute is a modifier also used in a combat round.

The more Prowess the better chance of winning the combat round.

Say we have:

Player: Hit Dice of 3d20 and Prowess of 25.

NPC: Hit Dice of 2d20 and Prowess of 22.

At the beginning of a combat round, both the Player and the NPC opponent roll their respective Hit Dice.

Let's say the player rolled 6 + 10 + 7 for a total of 23. We then add the Player's Prowess and get the figure 48.
Let's say the NPC rolled 5 + 15 for a total of 20. We then add the NPC's Prowess and get the figure 42.

The higher score wins the round, so in this example the Player has won the combat round and is the one that manages to inflict damage to the NPC.

Here's an example of a combat round readout.

At the beginning there is the Hit Dice Round Roll.

The player rolls 3d20 and gets 47. Prowess is set arbitrarily high for this example so the outcome is a win - this is just for illustration. The opponent does their roll too and we have a result.

After that there is a roll for damage (1d4 here). The player has a Brawling skill that adds to that base dice damage.

Health is reduced on the opponent appropriately and we would then move onto the next combat round.
